Here a report of the beginning of 1921
on the population of Cilicie (SHD 4H229). Precautions are taken
for saying to which point the numbers are dubious and approximate.
They are however interesting to show the diversity of the
population. We can imagine that the Christian populations were
particularly difficult to evaluate after the massacres of 1909 and
1915, the deportations of 1915, the returns of 1919... and the
massacres of 1920.
We will thus take the figures given by the official statistics [ Ottomans ] to know the number of Turks and those given by various nationalities to know the number of the nationals of each one, and we will consider only the proportion as suitable, and we will take only as indication the figures of the various communities. And initially, the number of these nationalities is very high; some have between them a mortal hatred, most of them feel as released from the yoke of the Turkish despotism; all are jealous of their existance and claim the right to the life.
